Wide awake in the middle of the night

Trying to convince myself that everything’s alright.

I’m the kind of tired that sleep just doesn’t fix

And when I close my eyes, my mind keeps playing tricks.

The present is a “gift”- but lately I’m not sure…

And there are times the past still shows up knocking at my door.

Tomorrow is another step closer to…I don’t know…?

The future is a distant dream that’s arriving much too slow.

Restlessness is on my left, uncertainty on my right-

The middle has me on my back with just the dark in sight.

Nights like these feel much too long as I’m struggling to cope

Through all the tossing back and forth…what I’m searching for is hope.

I get up from my bed, go to the window with a sigh

With blurry eyes and a foggy mind, I look up at the sky.

Though it’s dark inside my house and out across the night,

There’re little reminders all-around that there’s always still some light.

I count the stars one by one- eventually I lose count

I think of how God knows them all by name…He knows the amount.

My mind travels to that night many years ago

Where wise men followed a star that showed them where to go.

“When they saw the star, they were filled with joy”

They knew that true light had come in the form of a little boy.

Jesus is the light, and He’s still here today

Shining through the darkness- helping me find my way.

He’s never left me in the dark- not even for a minute

Even in the restless nights…still, He’s right there in it.

I climb back into bed, but this time more at peace

Knowing that I’m not alone, puts my mind at ease.

I look up one more time and say the words “thank you”

Pray for hope-filled dreams and for the world to know true light too.”

Mathew 2: 9-11 NLT

"After this interview the wise men went their way. And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was.  When they saw the star, they were filled with joy!  They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh."

John 1:9

"The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world."

Psalm 147:4

"He counts the stars and calls them all by name."
